Dr. Sean Lager is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who was fellowship trained in sports medicine. In 2012, Dr. Lager received his subspecialty certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery for Sports Medicine, joining a select number of distinguished sports medicine specialists in the United States.
Dr. Lager's interests include arthroscopy and the management of sports-related and severe traumatic injuries for children and adults. His patients range from elite level and professional athletes to weekend warriors. He treats anything from mild ankle sprains to complex, multi-fracture trauma.
Dr. Lager continues to perfect his surgical techniques and stays current with the latest technologies by routinely attending surgical workshops every year. He prefers arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques to open procedures.
Dr. Lager completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore where he was a member of the medical staff for the Baltimore Ravens and served as the primary physician for several Division I college and high school teams. Since that time, he has been the head physician for the New Jersey All-Star High School Football team for 3 years and continues to work with numerous local high school and college teams while at Gotham City Orthopedics.
Dr. Sean Lager was an Illinois high school state champion in swimming and soccer and competed at the NCAA Division I level until he sustained a knee injury and underwent surgery. He currently is a member of the New York Road Runners club and completed the NYC Marathons in 2011 and 2013.
Because of this, Dr. Lager understands how important it is for athletes to be able to return to their sports as soon as possible. He personally experienced the anxiety, fear, and pain of surgery and the demands of post-operative physical therapy.
When asked why he became an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Lager stated, "I had a negative experience as a patient, and while my surgeon was world-renowned, he never put me at ease or answered my questions thoroughly. I believed there was significant room for improvement and thought I could better empathize with my patients' worries and symptoms." With this perspective firmly in mind when working with each patient, Dr. Lager has earned a reputation for being an outstanding and compassionate orthopedic surgeon.
